In 2019, HAC’s Spring Symposium will convene a panel of esteemed housing legislators from the East Bay to find out “What San Francisco Can Learn From The East Bay!” We are honored to hear opening remarks from District 5 Supervisor Vallie Brown, followed by a panel of Senator Nancy Skinner, Assemblymember Buffy Wicks, Councilmember Lori Droste, and Councilmember John Bauters with the SF Biz Times’s Jim Gardner moderating. Join us at Bently Reserve on the evening of May 30th for drinks, bites, and a fantastic panel.

Opening Remarks

Supervisor Vallie Brown

Supervisor Brown represents District 5, which includes the Inner Sunset, Haight-Ashbury, Cole Valley, Lower Haight, Hayes Valley, Alamo Square, Fillmore/Western Addition, Japantown, Cathedral Hill, Lower Pacific Heights, North of the Panhandle, and Tank Hill. She has lived in District 5 for over twenty years.

Senator Nancy Skinner

Elected in November of 2016, State Senator Nancy Skinner represents California’s 9th Senate District, which includes the cities of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito, Emeryville, El Sobrante, Hercules, Kensington, Oakland, Piedmont, Pinole, Richmond, Rodeo, San Leandro and San Pablo. Last year, HAC recognized the Senator as a Housing Hero in 2018! This year, she is leading the pro-housing charge, again, with SB 330, the Housing Crisis Act of 2019.





Assemblymember Buffy Wicks

Buffy Wicks, elected to the State Assembly in November 2018, is a community organizer, an advocate for kids, and a grassroots activist with experience at the local, state and federal level. She was born in a small town in rural California and grew up in a trailer, raised by working class parents who pushed her to work hard and think big.







Councilmember Lori Droste

This Berkeley City Councilmember represents the 8th District and has served on the city’s Housing Advisory Commission. She is currently leading an initiative for the city of Berkeley to study potential avenues for the restoration of Missing Middle Housing in Berkeley.






Councilmember John Bauters

Councilmember Bauters was elected to the Emeryville City Council in 2016 after serving as a member of the City’s Housing Committee and Planning Commission. Both a former tenant attorney and statewide housing policy director in Sacramento, he lead the successful campaign to pass Measure C, Emeryville’s $50 million affordable housing bond as the city’s mayor in 2018.
